Classe today is a small town about 5 kilometers from Ravenna. It is home to one of the eight monuments of Ravenna designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, namely The Basilica of St Apollinare. It is one of the symbolic places in the history of Ravenna’s spirituality. It in fact sheds light on one of the city’s most prosperous periods.
In the early 6th century, in fact, Ravenna underwent a monumental program of religious and architectural renewal. The Church of St. Apollinare in Classe was built on the site where, according to local tradition, the founder of Ravenna‘s Christian community, the Bishop Apollinare, was martyred in the first century.
One of the best-known mosaic compositions from the 6th century is preserved in the basilica, which is characterized by dense symbolism.
