Discover the Church of St. Apollinare in Classe on a Private Tour

Just 5 kilometers from the historic center of Ravenna lies the town of Classe, a place of profound significance in the tapestry of early Christian history. Classe is home to one of Ravenna’s most revered UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Basilica of St. Apollinare in Classe. This iconic basilica stands as a monument to the city’s rich spiritual legacy and offers a glimpse into one of the most interesting periods in Ravenna’s history.

The history of Ravenna and Classe

The early 6th century was a time of great religious and architectural renewal in Ravenna, as the city sought to assert its importance as a spiritual and cultural center in the Byzantine Empire. It was during this period that the Church of St. Apollinare in Classe was constructed, on the very site where, according to local tradition, St. Apollinare—Ravenna’s first bishop and the founder of its Christian community—was martyred in the first century. The basilica was built to honor his legacy and quickly became a central place of worship and pilgrimage.

The church of St. Apollinare in Classe mosaics

One of the basilica’s most outstanding features is its exquisite 6th-century mosaic, a masterpiece of early Christian art renowned for its rich symbolism and vibrant colors. The mosaic, located in the apse, depicts St. Apollinare in a pastoral setting, surrounded by sheep and a radiant cross, symbolizing the Christian faith’s triumph over time. The intricate details and profound symbolism of this mosaic make it one of the most important and well-preserved examples of Byzantine art in the world, offering visitors a unique window into the spiritual and cultural life of Ravenna during this golden age.

It was a delight to join Luana for this tour!! The mosaics are gorgeous on their own, but I got so much more from the experience because I joined the tour. I was the only person on the tour, and really enjoyed chatting with Luana and hearing her passion for early Christian artwork! When we finished the mosaics a little early, she even generously offered to show me other parts of the city. If you are anywhere near Ravenna, I’d highly recommend a visit and tour with Luana.
