Discover the history and art of Ferrara

Ferrara and its historic center offer multiple readings of the ideology that marked its most flourishing period, forging it and returning it to modern times as an “ideal city.”

Therefore, the guided tour cannot ignore the history of the family that was its architect, the Este, whose rule over the city was interrupted, after about four centuries, by the devolution of the Ferrara fiefdom to the Papal States in 1598. Buildings and places that evoke their splendor are included in the itinerary: the imposing castle, the Salone dei Mesi at the Schifanoia Palace, the Palazzo dei Diamanti and the Angeli crossroads, as well as the Ducal Palace, now the seat of the Town Hall.

On Trento-Trieste Square, the heart of the city, stands the imposing St George’s Cathedral, currently undergoing restoration.

From the same square, Via G. Mazzini opens another chapter in the city’s history: that of the Jewish community, which winds its way through alleys, palaces and the stories of its protagonists.

The illustrious names linked to the city of Ferrara are countless. From Ludovico Ariosto to Torquato Tasso, from Cosmè Tura to Francesco del Cossa and Ercole de’ Roberti, to Bastianino, protagonists of the so-called Officina Ferrarese. Moving closer to our own time, Giovanni Boldini and Filippo de Pisis, De Chirico and Michelangelo Antonioni, just to name a few.
