Join my Ferrara guided tours and discover the first city to be developed according to a complex urban plan.

The historic center of Ferrara is a true treasure trove of architectural and artistic wonders, preserving the elements and structure that earned it the prestigious title of the “ideal city” of the Renaissance. As you stroll through its streets, you can sense the elegance and grandeur of a glorious past, steeped in history and culture.
The guided tour of the city will begin with the story of the Este family, who were the driving force behind the development and magnificence of Ferrara. Their rule, which lasted nearly four centuries, came to an abrupt end with the transfer of the Ferrarese fiefdom to the Papal States in 1598. During the tour, we will explore the buildings and sites that still bear witness to the splendor of the Este court: the majestic Este Castle, with its towers and moats, the evocative Hall of the Months in Palazzo Schifanoia, richly decorated, and the famous Palazzo dei Diamanti, renowned for its unique facade adorned with over 8,500 diamond-shaped marble blocks. The route will also take us to the Quadrivio degli Angeli, a symbolic crossroads of Renaissance urban planning, and the Ducal Palace, now the seat of the City Hall, which was once the center of Este power.
At the heart of the city stands the Cathedral of San Giorgio, one of the most imposing testaments to Ferrara’s religious heritage. Currently undergoing restoration, this Romanesque-Gothic cathedral is a focal point of the city, with its richly decorated facade and unfinished bell tower.
Continuing from Piazza Trento e Trieste, next to the cathedral, we will proceed along Via G. Mazzini, leading us to another fascinating chapter of Ferrara’s history: that of its ancient Jewish community. This neighborhood, once the vibrant center of Jewish life, tells stories of integration, but also of persecution and resilience, which have deeply marked the city.
Ferrara boasts an endless list of illustrious personalities who have left an indelible mark on its history. Among the writers, the names of Ludovico Ariosto and Torquato Tasso stand out, while among the artists, we find masters of the so-called “Ferrarese School” like Cosmè Tura, Francesco del Cossa, Ercole de’ Roberti, and Bastianino. Moving closer to modern times, Ferrara has either been the birthplace of or has inspired internationally renowned artists such as Giovanni Boldini, Filippo de Pisis, Giorgio De Chirico, and the celebrated filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni, to name just a few.
